Hour of Play
Crane Royal Comets have been working hard and need some extra play time! To earn it, we’ll have a whole school challenge to earn 10,000 Comet Cards by giving out compliments. Giving compliments is a skill that fosters connection, shows empathy, encourages positivity, and improves mental health for both the giver and the receiver. We’ll be collecting and counting these Comet Cards as we go and will share our progress regularly. If we’re successful, we’ll have an extra HOUR of play on Thursday, May 21. You can help at home by practicing this skill with YOUR Royal Comet. Please consider using this Compliment Starter Worksheet for ideas. Good luck, Royal Comets! We are up to 7,000 Comet Cards!
Budget Vote and BOE Election is Tuesday, May 19
Rush-Henrietta’s annual budget vote is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. this Tuesday, May 19. The vote is at the district’s Transportation and Operations Center, 1133 Lehigh Station Road. Please make a plan now to vote on Tuesday. Make your voice heard!
Budget Highlights
The proposed budget-to-budget change from this year to next is 4.39 percent. The proposal will:
- preserve and strengthen instructional programs for 5,700+ R-H students.
- ensure ongoing mental wellness initiatives to support those R-H students.
- strengthen employees’ total compensation to make R-H more competitive. This includes teachers, bus drivers and monitors, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, and facilities employees.
- align spending with district priorities and Vision 2037 strategic plan.
Taking into account the School Tax Relief (STAR) benefit, a district resident owning a house assessed at $300,000 would see school tax rise by $82 next year.
Board of Education Candidates
Three community members are running for two open seats on the Board of Education. They are Dre Collins, Shiloh Arthmann, and Laura Borate. The trio recently answered questions during Meet the Candidates Night, which you can view by clicking the link. In Rush-Henrietta, board members are volunteers who serve unpaid three-year terms.
Absentee and Early Ballots
Qualified voters who would like an application for an absentee ballot or early voting ballot may contact District Clerk Cheryl Castronovo at 359-5010 or ccastronovo@rhnet.org for more information. You can learn more by consulting the back page of the newsletter.

Dear Crane Families,
It has been a cold week! It would be nice to get our temperature above freezing, wouldn’t it? Even though we can’t go outside, students are given movement breaks and inside recess so they can still play with their friends. Please check out some important updates in this message.
Creating Rituals and Routines
Rituals and routines are very important to children. As we move into the next semester, having an established bedtime and homework time is important. A tired child has a hard time focusing on tasks and completing work throughout the school day. Thank you for your support with this.

Dear Crane Families,
We are almost midway through January. Please remember attendance is very important, and being here every day makes a difference for your child. Please check out the attached pictures from this week.
Rush-Henrietta Teacher of the Year
We are proud to announce that our very own Mrs. Burgos has been named Rush-Henrietta Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Burgos has distinguished herself as an exceptional educator whose dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students set a remarkable standard within our school community.
For the past 12 years at Crane, she has consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching while building strong, meaningful relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Her passion for learning, collaborative spirit, and commitment to growth have made a lasting impact on our school and continue to inspire those around her.
Martin Luther King Jr
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on January 19. Dr. King was a leader who believed in kindness, fairness, and treating everyone with respect. He taught people to solve problems peacefully and to stand up for what is right. We honor Dr. King by being kind to others, helping our friends, and making our school a welcoming place for everyone. As a reminder, schools are closed Monday, January 19, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
PTO Trophy Award
Congratulations to Mrs. Schiralli’s class. They had the most parents attend the PTO meeting on Tuesday night. They received their trophy today. See their attached picture.

December E-News Messages
December 18, 2025
Dear Crane Families,
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. The students have worked very hard over the past four months reading, writing, solving problems, and learning about science and social studies concepts. When we return, we have a lot of work to complete over six months. It is very important that your child is attending school every day.
Winter break is here, and how do I keep my kids busy? I have provided a list to help.
- Make bird feeders for your trees outside.
- Bowl with your family and knock them down.
- Go for a hike.
- Interview a family member you don’t see very often.
- Have an ice cream taste test.
- Start a journal.
- Draw and design your own cards (maybe thank you cards).
- Measure with Legos.
- Bring some snow inside and find out what part of your house is the coolest.
- Go on a scavenger hunt outside.

Rochester City Ballet
Rochester City Ballet performed the popular seasonal favorite, The Nutcracker, today. Crane students explored the story and the music with Mrs. Schmitz prior to the assembly. The Rochester City Ballet was founded in 1987 by Timothy M. Draper, and began as a student company before becoming a professional company in 2003. Since then, it has grown into the only professional ballet company in Western New York. The RBC is known for its collaborations with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and other local arts organizations and they are committed to community outreach to make dance accessible to all. Thank you to the RBC for coming to perform for us and don't forget to ask your Royal Comet about the experience!

Digital Equity Survey/SchoolTool Access
New York requires school districts to gather information regarding home access to the Internet, and what devices students use. This annual Digital Equity Survey is accessible through SchoolTool now. When you log in to SchoolTool, you will be prompted to respond to several brief questions found in each student's SchoolTool account. This will only take a few minutes and is available through the app or by logging on to the SchoolTool website. We created a document to walk you through the process if you are using the website instead of the app. We have also created a short video to assist you with a few of your selections while taking the survey. If you are using the SchoolTool mobile app on your phone, you may see multiple surveys for each student. The required survey will be in red text. Please update or complete the survey no later than Friday, Dec. 12. If you completed the survey last year, please review your responses to verify the information is still accurate.
Local Resources for Families
With the holiday season approaching and the potential for limited federal resources being made available to assist local families, we want to remind our community of several local avenues of support. Students can always take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch options on school days. (We recommend submitting the annual free and reduced lunch forms so R-H can continue to provide an array of services to students and families.) In addition, families can utilize the R-H Kicking Hunger School Food Pantry and additional local food resources. You also may visit this page on our website for a variety of resources available to families.

Take a moment to thank a veteran today—whether it’s a family member, friend, or neighbor—for their contributions to our nation.

Physical Education
Students need to wear sneakers to keep themselves safe during PE. Sandals, Crocs, and dress shoes are not safe footwear for PE. They can bring them to school in their backpack but should have sneakers for PE and recess every day.
DESSA Screener
More than two decades of research helps us understand the important role that social-emotional skills play in shaping each student's success both now and in the future. Making good decisions, demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, and working well as a member of a group are examples of skills necessary for children to be successful well into adulthood.
We are committed to prioritizing mental health and supporting our strategic-plan goal to increase the social-emotional competence of our students. For the second year, R-H will be using a strength-based universal screening tool called DESSA. It is our goal to have 80 percent of students take part in this benchmarking twice each school year - once in the fall and spring. At the K-6 level, teachers will complete administration of this screener for their entire class. Building teams will review the data and use it to help shape the support we provide to students. You can opt-out your child by emailing me before Monday, October 13. (bhill@rhnet.org)

Deputies transported the person to a hospital for further evaluation. Although there was an initial report of a weapon, a search of the grounds - led by deputies doing K9, drone, and foot searches - found no such evidence. District Safety Director Michael Paladino was also there, reviewing security footage with deputies.
No threats were made to the school. However, because this unfolded on school property, MCSO offered to have an officer stationed near campus during arrival time today to provide additional peace of mind. We appreciate our partnership with the MCSO and the support they provide.
We anticipate a normal school day today. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,

Brian Hill

Dear Crane Families,
Thanks to all the parents who attended the open house on Thursday night. It was awesome seeing all the students showing their families around. Check out the attached pics from this week.
Safety Week Scheduled for September 29 - October
As part of our continuing efforts to make schools as safe as possible for all students and staff, the Rush-Henrietta Central School District will hold safety drills during the week of September 29 - October 3. These drills are designed to practice and assess emergency response procedures. During this week, the buildings will practice evacuation, medical emergency, and lockdown emergency response procedures. The Rush-Henrietta Central School District works year-round to refine its safety and emergency response practices. These activities help us be as prepared as possible in the event of an actual emergency. Thank you for your patience and support as we complete these important drills.

You Belong Here: Hispanic Heritage Month
While many of us are celebrating the arrival of the weekend, a special group of people has been preparing for a celebration of a different sort! Hispanic Heritage Month will last until October 15. First observed on a weekly basis in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was signed into federal law in 1988. This designation reminds us each year to take time to reflect on people from Hispanic backgrounds who make a difference in our community, schools, and lives every day. There is a place for all of us in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District. You belong here! Learn more here.

Dear Crane Families,
The second week of school was awesome! The kindergarten students all know how to get to their classrooms and students are doing a great job supporting each other. Check out the attached pics from this week.
Late Arrival Information
Students that arrive to school at 7:45 a.m. or after are considered late. Doors close promptly at 7:45 a.m., so students arriving after that time must gain entrance through the main door only. Parents must walk their student to the main entrance to sign them into school; students will be marked as a late arrival. To avoid tardiness, please send your student via bus or parent drop-off between 7:35 and 7:45 a.m. If you are dropping off your child, please stay in your car and have them sit on the passenger side. This will keep drop-off moving smoothly.
PTO Trophy Winner
On Wednesday, we held our first PTO meeting of the year. Congratulations to Mr. Brawn’s class, who had the most parents in attendance! Their class will proudly keep the PTO trophy until our next meeting. Be sure to check out their picture in this week’s e-news.
We are thrilled to share that 41 people attended, representing 18 different classrooms. This is a fantastic start, and we look forward to seeing even more families join us at future meetings!
Remind APP
Remind Hub is the district’s communication platform, making it easy for families and schools to stay connected. All primary contacts listed in SchoolTool are automatically enrolled into their child’s classes. To join directly, you can text the code 8g3db43 to 81010 and start receiving updates from Crane Elementary.
